SafeGolf award is given on completion of the safeguarding section of GolfMark - see www.golfmark.org for more info.
What this means for the club is that we can now effectively promote coaching courses etc for children & young adults, educational establishments, disability groups, as this is a standard that is expected and required.
We join a small group of golf clubs, we're the 3rd, in the north west of England to achieve this award, below explains what SafeGolf is about.
“The SafeGolf partnership consists of members from the golfing bodies across Great Britain & Ireland and has been established to help golf respond to the issue of child protection in sport.
Its mission is to safeguard the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk, in the sport of golf.
SafeGolf is firstly, a website – see www.safegolf.org – through which anyone with a concern about the welfare of a player, or the behaviour or practice of a coach, volunteer, organiser, parent or a player, can contact the lead safeguarding officer at their national governing body.
Secondly, it is the safeguarding standard England Golf will promote to all their affiliated clubs to ensure all clubs provide a safe and positive experience to children and young people whilst playing golf.
The PGA are also using the standards to apply to all their PGA professional Coaches”
As part of the process, the club has appointed Penny Beckett as our Club Welfare Officer (CWO) this role involves being able to recognise the signs and indicators of abuse, bullying and poor practice and to be aware of how it should be appropriately dealt with.
The role acts independently and is the clubs point of contact for any incidents described above.
